Clearly my favorite type of watches are the wild modern independent pieces, but my second favorite is good old-fashioned haute horlogerie. This Vacheron minute repeater from my personal collection is tough to beat in that respect. The case shape and proportions are perfect and the lugs are absolutely to die for. The patina on the yellow gold case gives the whole watch a vintage appeal, while providing the perfect contrast to the gorgeous blue of the lapis lazuli moonphase.

This watch was made to compete head to head with the Patek 3974. At the time, the brands were on equal footing. In the subsequent 30 years, Pateks fortunes have risen while VC’s have waned. But to my eyes, the 30020 is nicer than the 3974 in every way.
